A short history of Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is one of the English West Africa speaking countries. It was colonised by the British in 1787. Above the equator is bordering with the Republic of Guinea and Liberia. It has a population of 5.9million people divided into 4 regions, North, East, and South and with the capital Freetown in the Western region. Originally there were 16 different tribes in Sierra Leone. The two main tribes are Mende and Temne.

Languages and resources

The main languages are Krio, Temne, Mende and English. The official language is English. The majority of the people of Sierra Leone speak Krio. Sierra Leone is generally rich in natural resources such as minerals, fishery, and agriculture. It produces some of the world’s finest diamonds.There are two main religions in Sierra Leone, Islam 45%, Christianity is 40% and also a small number of Animists. Despite the different places of worship, there are no religious conflicts in Sierra Leone and one way or the other every one is related to another. Because of family relationships, by almost all Sierra Leoneans celebrate both Islamic and Christian festivals.

A short history and politics

The written history of Sierra Leone begins in 1462. A Portuguese explorer called Pedro de Centre landed in 1462 and named the country “Sierra Lyoa” ( Lion Mountains) because the profile of the mountains resembled that of sleeping loins. Sierra Leone was referred to as the “Athens” of West Africa because of its flourishing in the areas of education and commerce. Europeans used the land as a source of slaves and in 1787; Freetown was established as a city of former slaves in London.Sierra Leone is a constitutional republic with a direct elected President and a unicameral legislature. In 2002, the devastating 11-year civil conflict officially ended, and the Government backed UN peacekeeping force, asserted control over the whole country. Dr.Ahmed Tejan Kabbah was re-elected President in 2002 and the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) was the ruling party on to the 8th of September 2007, when it lost power to the All People's Congress (APC party) during the run-off election.The APC party which was the opposition party is now the ruling party and it also formed the majority in Parliament. The current President of Sierra Leone is Dr. Earnest Bai Koroma who was the opposition leader of the current ruling APC Party.
